Maybe someone can clarify...

Why is there such controversy surrounding the implementation of Shari'ah arbitration into Canadian Law? and especially by Muslim women? I just don't get it.

Farah and I @ her Walima in August '04 Posted by Hello

Been a rough morning!

You know when you're trying to catch up on a week's worth of sleep... and so you want to sleep well into the day... yeah that was what i was hoping for today. Been up late and getting up early all week... and no one was home today so I thought it'd be perfect...

...And it was until 9:00 am... when my Uncle started calling and calling... his first call, I went to check to see who it was... i got up all disoriented and without my glasses.. when i saw that it was him i went back to bed... my Dad wasn't home anyways...plus I figured he'd get the point that no one was home. NO... that didn't happen!! And he didn't just call back once or twice.... he called back 5 times!!! Every other freakin minute...

Eventually I fell asleep again... but u know it's just not the same tranquility as before... and then later i was making lunch for my parents... and i slightly burned my finger... in the toaster oven. Yeahhhh it's possible! And GH is not on today... the one day I can watch it... and it's not on because of stupid Thanksgiving.

Wedding Season #3: 2 more weddings to go

Ever since Anu's Mehndi.. I am back into the Shadi songs spirit... there is this one song from Pardes that I am especially in love with right now. It's called... "Do Dil mil rahay hain"... it's soooo sweet.... and no I'm not a ref... besides I didn't even know what movie it was from.. I sang it to Shazia and she recognized it so she's the ref.

Anyways, so his wedding was on Friday @ Woodbine... I realized that it's literally impossible to be late for a paki wedding... we got there at 8:00 (even though we were supposed to be there for 7:00) .. my fault, I was doing my hair (tee hee)... and yet we managed to get there right in time for the arrival of the baraat...and appetizers.. double woo hoo!

Anu looked amazing! I've known this guy for like a good 10 years... and he has never worn shalwar kameez in his life.. until his mehndi... but at the wedding... he had the most stylin' Sherwani ever... it almost looked like a tux!! I think I got a coupla shots of them at the wedding.. I'll put some pics up later. I finally met the infamous Nadia... his wife... she's such a sweetheart. Her outfit was.... different... i guess non-traditional would be the word... but I like the traditional stuff so I didn't like the outfit that much.... BUT her jewellery was gorgeous... it wasn't gold.. just lottsa rubies!! After the Nikah, when they do the rasms... Anu did the cuuuutest thing... you know that rasm where the guy and girl are both under the dupatta or whatever and they get to see each other (after the nikah) for the first time in the mirror... he gave her this cute little wave... I guess it was even cuter because it wasn't characteristic of him. Like even when he used to talk bout her or when people would congratulate him about the engagement.. he would get all shy.

Okay I gotta run.. class in 8 minutes.. will update later.

I just figured out how to get images on here ... this one is sooo cute:

Exams are coming up....nooooooooooooo!! My first is next Thursday.... and to make things worse I have a huge term paper due that day at 9:00 am too... otherwise the other exams are pretty spaced out... my last exam is on the last day in the last time slot... Dec. 21st... that means only 2 weeks off :(

Right in time for the RIS Conference [http://revivingtheislamicspirit.com] on Dec.24-26 2004 @ Skydome. I'm thinking bout volunteering ... as long as it's NOT for the children's program... too many horror stories from last year. Should be a huge turnout insh'Allah... I've been hearing that they are expecting upto 15,000 people this time round... amazing speakers... huge bazaar... new theatre... should be massive.

Go ShaziA!

Hey ... I jus wanted to let everyone know that our own l'il hydro hijabi Shazia has been published!! Yes, it's true... in the illustrious Brampton Guardian! You can check out her poignant letter on how a recent political cartoon has disgraced Yasser Arafat's memory, at the following link:

http://www.northpeel.com/br/editorial/letter/story/2353796p-2724931c.html

The ironic thing was that they placed her letter next to another political cartoon relating to the Middle East... LOL ...i don't remember what the cartoon was bout... maybe Shazia can remember... but nonetheless... good job Shazia!

ONE EiD!!

According to http://moonsighting.com, Eid-ul Fitr 2004 will be on Sunday, November 14 insh'Allah! For once, we just may have a united Eid... what a concept.. one Eid!

Where are you guys going for Eid Prayers? I'm most likely heading to Trillium :)

So, an EID MUBARAK in advance to you and your families!! And don't forget to get me an Eid present ... tee hee

The "After Maghrib" Rule

WHO made up this "After Maghrib" Rule?!

It is the biggest bakwaas I've ever heard! Ramadaan is referred to as the blessed month for a reason... the whole month: day and night are meant to be spent in a state of purity and restraint.. in ibaadah, reading the Qu'ran, etc. Just because you stop fasting after Maghrib doesn't mean that u can carry on with ur regular, worldly activities the rest of the day... come on yaars... whether it be music, movies, both or whatever... even the gym... video games... u get the point... you can surely live without it atleast in Ramadan.

And I'm not hardcore...

Recap on the weekend

My weekend was pretty crazy... i always say that don't i tho?

FRIDAY
Anyways... hafta say the Qiyaam on Friday/Saturday was a LOT of fun! My first Qiyaam... and they were right bout the not sleeping part... although i was like the ONLY one who didnt sleep all night... I was busy taking pictures of them all sleeping and drooling... it was soooo funny...everyone looks hilarious when they are sleeping. I think I got everyone except for Shabina... who freaked out in her state of semi-consciousness and pulled the blanket over her head..me and Marria got scared that she would could come and beat us up... so we left her alone the rest of the night. I wonder if they even have any idea that i have whack pics of them... haha... i guess they are gonna hafta mysteriously show up at wedding slideshows...

SATURDAY
I slept after Fajr for like an hour (I made sure not to tell anyone bout the 'sleeping' pictures in case they decided to get even..lol) and then Naila woke me up @ 7.. grrrr.. for her little presentation with all the lil kids... where I won a chocolate bar... yayy!

Oh yeah there was a scary incident at like 2 am... the outside door was open and there was a huge boulder keeping it open and all of the girls were upstairs and all the guys had been sleeping for like hours... so we woke up Hassan and made him check it out.. because the 3 of us were too scared to go check plus we didnt wanna lock someone out.. it was a pretty cold night... poor Hassan had to go check it out...

Then i got home around noon on Saturday... tried to stay awake and keep my mom company...after getting punked for not spending time with her lately.... couldn't do it... all i remember is her telling me to stop snoring and get outta her room.... so then i finally got a few hours of sleep. Then no one woke me up until 3:00... and man i really needed to shower... and we had to head out to a huge iftaar at bout 4:00.. i dunno how i managed to shower and look decent in an hour.. but i did it!

Iftaar was at Farah's parents' place....got to see my Farhi... haven't seen her since like late September... and another family friend of mine, Naureen aka Noni who was down from Virginia ...mash'Allah she looked amazing... 6 months pregnant and all... can't believe it still... I grew up with these girls and now they are all married and all... it's still hard to believe sometimes! And both younger than me too!! It's always fun getting together with childhood buddies... wish we could get together more often.

Finally saw Farah's wedding video and the wedding pics... once i figure out how to put up pics on here i will put up some of the wedding pics. The speeches at her wedding were amazing... but then again Farah is such an amazing person mash'Allah!! Her brothers' speech was prob the best speech I've ever heard... jus watching all of the speeches again... I was brought to tears again... and then they were laughing at me... I hope my bro's give speeches that make me cry at my wedding!! They'd better.. or I'll make them cry instead...

TODAY
... yeah.. slept thru Suhoor and Fajr... caught up on some well needed sleep... woke up around noon. Was feeling really lazy... but finally rolled outta bed. Had to be at Soundvision by 1:30... a couple of us were heading downtown for this thing called "Feeding the Streets", where we were gonna hand out some sandwiches and water to the less fortunate. Alhumdalillah I think it went pretty well. Although, the day started off a lil shaky... and we got there a bit later than we had anticipated... so anyways, we all split up in our groups and so me and Juwariah were heading down Jarvis St... and then we turned around to look for the other people in our group and we noticed this guy on the ground and a few people surrounding him. Turned out that the guy had gone into diabetic shock... so then me and Sahar ran to the convenience store across the street... and we couldn't believe it... on the door was a sign reading: be back in 1 minute. Of all of the minutes in all of the days, the guy had to step away for that particular minute?!!? So then we ran down to Rabba's and I dunno why we told the guy bout the guy who had gone into shock... but anyways so we grabbed some OJ and a mars bar.. and ran back. The funniest thing happend while we were running back... this guy (I presume was homeless) was cheering us on.. he was RUN! RUN! Faster! and we couldn't help but laugh... which slowed us down like 3 seconds. Anyways, by the way we finally made it back... they didn't need it anymore... bc other people had passed by in that time we were gone and they had had smarties and juice... and they had decided to wait for the Ambulance to come anyways. So, some lucky people got a mars bar and some Orange juice. Our plan of heading to Nathan Phillips Square didn't work out... we ran outta food by Asr... but I think it went well. Weather wasn't too bad either. Me and my bro decided we'd come home for Iftar (because Ammi called and wanted us to come home for Iftar).. we didn't make it... we got home at like 6.. to some cold pakoras... but no complaints... alhum we have a home to come home to... food everyday... I hope this experience stays with me.

And that concludes my weekend... and so begins another week...

Feel like shoppin... and sharing random thoughts & events

Ahhh.. Life is pretty boring these days... school is pretty chill for now because midterms are over and assignments are right around the corner but they can wait.

Been working the last few days... and going to work makes me realize that I'm making money... which makes me wanna spend it... what good is saving it? Don't answer that! Soo, yeah i was thinking of buying those scrub pants from the Bookstore... they're a gray-teal colour and they have U of T written on the err... back of them... they look sooo comfy and halaal !!! So i really could use them. Ramadan makes me wanna curl up in a corner and jus read the Qu'ran... speaking of which I really need to catch up on my Qu'ran reading!! Like REALLY... insh'Allah tonight after Maghrib...

I won't be able to make it to the iftaar on campus today. Ammi wants me to come home and have iftar with the family... so can't argue with her... besides I miss her pakoras and cholay and fruit chaat... must stop thinking bout food! But for anyone going... have fun.. it's Africa Day... there is a whole day of events as well @ Student Centre... oh yeah there is also the Shari'a Tribunal Discussion going on today @ Kaneff... I think I'm gonna try to check that out....

Oh yeah, just a lil announcement for the girls in the GTA. YM Event.

Gorays man.....

I jus have one question.... Why don't gorays like trying desi food... especially after people, who shall remain nameless, go thru so much trouble to organize such an event ?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

Like, if you guys were goray.... wouldn't you want to try colourful mithai like Ladoos and Burfi... instead of eating ur plain ol BLAND white food... wouldn't you want a samosa anyways?! Everyone loves samosas!!

Plus, they all live in Brampton, you'd think they'd be half indian by now!!!!

I missed Smallville :(

What happened on Smallville... I keep missing it because of work... and then no one seems to conveniently remember what happened when I get home... stupid brothers.. good for nothing..

So if anyone has been keepin upto date with Smallville (the best show on TV after General Hospital!)... fill me in ...

Food.... and lots of it...

It's November today... and nothing much happened today.. but i wanted to have a post under my November archive. I'm not a nerd...

But... there was an iftar today at school... it was sponsored by this new mediterranean place called... get this.... "Something to Talk About" .... GOOD Food... the chicken tasted like Chicken Tikka.... Mmmmmm. Tasted more like desi food... but the rice was totally Greek'd out... Greek rice is the best.... and their potatoes too!

And.. I bought some mithai... and i have learned that there are wayyyy too many types of mithai out there... there are like 10 different Burfi's and so when the lady asked me which burfi i wanted i didn't know which one i wanted... anyways i realized i wanted the khoya ones... and then i decided to spring for some Ladoo's too... even tho i don't really dig them.

I am slowly realizing that food is a pretty big part of my everyday life... and that the gym is not.... NOT a good combination... grrrr
