Question of the Week: Is it permissible for men to wear platinum?

Last week, a few of my friends and I were discussing upcoming weddings.. since a couple of our close friends are getting married soon.. and the topic of wedding rings for men came up. More specifically, if men are allowed to wear platinum rings (since it's not gold). The argument was that it's not specifically stated that platinum is not permissible.

So for those wondering, I was looking this up on Sunnipath.com and came across this:

"In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

For men, only silver rings are permissible. Women have been given the permission to wear gold and silver rings without doubt. However, rings made form other metals are not permissible. Also, it seems that rings made from other plastic substances will not be permissible for women, thus should be avoided.

And Allah knows best. "

Sheikh M. S. Al-Munajjid, a prominent Saudi Muslim lecturer and author, states:

"There is nothing wrong, as far as Islam is concerned, as regards men wearing platinum rings as long as the following two conditions are met:

1- That it is not an extravagance on the part of one who cannot afford to wear this kind of jewelry.

2- That it should not be worn in order to cause temptation.

It is noteworthy that men are prohibited to wear gold rings.”

On the basis of the above-mentioned Fatwa, we conclude that your husband is permitted, as far as Islam is concerned, to wear platinum rings as long as the conditions mentioned above are met.

Hey salams,

To those sisters who are getting married, don't bother with a platinum ring. It's really soft so it gets scratched easily and costs about three times the price of gold. Titanium rings are great because they're durable and aren't shiny (ie. they appear more "masculine") and cost the same as gold.

As for the validity of those metals, my understanding is that gold rings and rings that display oppulence are forbidden (ie. those big pimp diamond rings that rappers wear!)

Assalaamu Alaikum :)

Oh wow, that's a pretty good question to address! Thanks hun.

And it would have been so great if you could enroll in the weekend courses. I'm so thrilled, I just love it. I noticed that some sisters attend but when they can't, they can't. I guess it's up to you if you are able to attend. Then again, you're already involved with halaqa's, masha'Allah, so you're in something! If you still want more info, I can always send you a link!

Miss you dear, hope all is well :D

Ok Question!!!!

It says "Women have been given the permission to wear gold and silver rings without doubt. However, rings made form other metals are not permissible." So....does that mean that it's not permissible for women to wear platinum either? :s

Well, this is what I think, so don't quote me or anything... but i guess it depends on how much you follow Hanafi Fiqh... so then, if you're ultra-Hanafi you'd probably follow both things aforementioned.
That silver and gold is ONLY permissible to women AND that silver is ONLY permissible to men.

One of my friends was actually asking me about the Engineering ring.. bc it's supposed to be Iron.. but it's actually Steel i think... so yeah... i guess more intensive research needs to be done.
